The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the monkey god in Hinduism. It was composed by the poet Tulsidas in the 16th century and is widely recited by Hindus around the world.

    Significance of Hanuman Chalisa

    • Hanuman Chalisa is a Hindu devotional hymn (stotra) that consists of 40 verses (chaupais) in praise of Lord Hanuman, the supreme devotee of Lord Ram and the son of the wind-god Vayu.

    श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
    बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु जो दायकु फल चारि॥


    Shri guru charan saroj raj, nij man mukur sudhaari,

    Baranau Raghubar Bimal jasu, Jo dayaku phal chaari


    Meaning: I clean my mind's mirror with the dust from the lotus feet of my Guru, and describe the glory of Lord Ram, who gives the four fruits of life: Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha.


    बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।

    बल बुद्धि बिद्या देहु मोहिं हरहु कलेस विकार॥


    Buddhiheen tanu jaanike, sumirau pavan-kumar,

    Bal buddhi vidya dehu mohe, Harahu kalesh vikaar


    Meaning: I know that I am foolish and ignorant, so I pray to Hanuman, the son of the wind, to grant me strength, intelligence, and knowledge, and to remove all my sorrows and afflictions.


    जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर।

    जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥


    Jai Hanuman gyan gun sagar,

    Jai Kapis tihun lok ujagar


    Meaning: Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of knowledge and virtue, who enlightens the three worlds with his radiance and skill (prowess).


    राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा।

    अंजनि-पुत्र पवन सुत नामा॥


    Ram doot atulit bal dhamaa,

    Anjani-putra Pavan sut naamaa


    Meaning: Hanuman, you are the messenger of Lord Ram, who has incomparable strength. Anjana's Son and popularly known as the son of the wind god (Pawan) .


    महावीर विक्रम बजरंगी।

    कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥


    Mahavir Vikram Bajrangi,

    Kumati nivar sumati ke sangi


    Meaning: Hanuman, the great hero and powerful one, with a body as strong as a diamond, who destroys all evil thoughts and is the companion of one who has good sense and wisdom.


    कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा कानन कुण्डल कुंचित केशा।

    हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा विराजैं कांधे मूँज जनेऊ साजा॥


    Kanchan baran biraj subesa, kanan kundal kunchit kesa,

    Haath vajra aur dhvaja virajai, kandhe munj janeu sajai


    Meaning: Hanuman's golden complexion and beautiful appearance are adorned with forest flowers and earrings. You holds a mace and a flag of righteousness in both hands, and has a decorated with sacred threads made of sacred Munja grass around the shoulder.


    शंकर सुवन केसरी नंदन।

    तेज प्रताप महा जग बन्दन॥


    Shankar suvan Kesari Nandan,

    Tej prataap maha jag vandan


    Meaning: Hanuman is the son of Monkey King Kesari and monkey Queen Anjana and is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is admired and revered throughout the world for his radiant power.


    विद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर।

    राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥


    Vidyavaan guni ati chaatur,

    Ram kaaj karibe ko aatur


    Meaning: Hanuman is learned, skilled, and extremely clever. He is always eager to serve Lord Ram and carry out his duties.


    प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया।

    राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥


    Prabhu charitra sunibe ko rasiya,

    Ram Lakhan Sita man basiya


    Meaning: Hanuman is enchanted by the divine story of Lord Ram and is devoted to him, along with his brother Lakshman and wife Sita, who (all three) resides in his heart.


    सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा।

    बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥


    Sukshma roop dhari Siyahin dikhava,

    Vikat roop dhari Lanka jarava


    Meaning: Hanuman revealed his tiny form to Sita, and he displayed his monstrous form while burning Lanka.


    भीम रूप धरि असुर संहारे।

    रामचंद्र के काज संवारे॥


    Bheem roop dhari asur sanhare,

    Ramachandra ke kaaj sanvare


    Meaning: Hanuman took on a massive form and destroyed the demons, and he accomplished all of Lord Ram's tasks.



    लाय सजीवन लखन जियाए।

    श्री रघुवीर हरषि उर लाए॥


    Laay sajivan Lakhan Jiyaye,

    Shri Raghuveer Harashi ur laye


    Meaning: Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshman, and his feat brought great joy to Lord Ram.


    रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई।

    तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥


    Raghupati kinhi bahut badaai,

    Tum mam priye Bharat-hi sama bhai


    Meaning: Lord Ram praised Hanuman greatly overflowing with gratitude for his service, and considered hanuman to be the loving brother as Bharat.


    सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं।

    अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावै॥


    Sahas badan tumharo jas gaave,

    Asa kahi Shripati kanth lagaave


    Meaning: The whole world sings your praises, and Lord Ram embraces you in his arms, saying that you are dear to him.


    सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा।

    नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥


    Sanakadik Brahmaadi Muneesa,

    Narad Sarad Sahit Aheesa


    Meaning: Even the great sages like Sanaka, Brahma, Narada and Saraswati (The Divine Mother), as well as the serpent king Vasuki (thousand mouthed serpent), praise Hanuman and sings your fame.


    जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहां ते।

    कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहां ते॥


    Jam Kuber digpaal jahan te,

    Kavi kovid kahi sake kahan te


    Meaning: Even Yama, the god of death, Kubera, the lord of wealth, and the guardians of the four directions, poets and scholars none can fully describe Hanuman's greatness.


    तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा।

    राम मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा॥


    Tum upkar Sugreevahin keenha,

    Ram milaay rajpad deenha


    Meaning: Hanuman helped Sugriva by bringing him to Lord Ram, and Lord Ram rewarded him by making him the ruler of the Vanaras.


    तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषन माना।

    लंकेश्वर भए सब जग जाना॥


    Tumharo mantra Vibheeshana maana,

    Lankeshwar bhaye Sab jag jana


    Meaning: Even Vibhishana, Ravana's brother, recognized Hanuman's power and wisdom, and following your preaching he became King of Lanka as Hanuman helped Lord Ram defeat Ravana, making him famous throughout the world.


    जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू।

    लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥


    Jug sahastra jojan par bhaanu,

    Leelyo taahi madhur phal jaanu


    Meaning: Hanuman is capable of traveling great distances in a short amount of time. He once flew to the sun, which is thousands of yojanas (1 yojana is approx 13kms) away, and mistook it for a sweet red fruit.


    प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं।

    जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥


    Prabhu mudrika meli mukh mahee,

    Jaladhi langhi gaye achraj nahee


    Meaning: Hanuman carried Lord Ram's ring to Sita as a sign of his presence, and after finding her, he leaped over the ocean without any difficulty.


    दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते।

    सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥

    Durgam kaaj jagat ke jete

    Sugam anugrah tumhare tete

    Meaning: Hanuman is capable of accomplishing any difficult task in the world with ease, and he is blessed with the power to bestow his blessings on those who seek his help.


    राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे।

    होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥


    Ram duare tum rakhvare,

    Hot na ajna binu paisare


    Meaning: Hanuman is the gatekeeper to Lord Ram's door, and he does not allow anyone to enter without Lord Ram's command.


    सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना।

    तुम रच्छक काहू को डर ना॥


    Sab sukh lahai tumhari sarna,

    Tum rakshak kahu ko dar na


    Meaning: Those who seek Hanuman's refuge are blessed with all kinds of happiness, and he is a protector who ensures that no one fears any harm.


    आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै।

    तीनों लोक हांक तें कांपै॥


    Aapan tej samhaaro aapai,

    Teeno lok haank te kaapai


    Meaning: Hanuman possesses the power to suppress his own strength, and his roar shakes all three worlds.



    भूत पिसाच निकट नहिं आवै।

    महावीर जब नाम सुनावै॥


    Bhoot pishach nikat nahin aavai,

    Mahavir jab naam sunaavai


    Meaning: Evil spirits and demons cannot come near a person who recites Lord Ram's name with devotion, just like they could not approach Hanuman when he chanted Lord Ram's name.


    नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा।

    जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा॥


    Nasai rog hare sab peera,

    Japat nirantar Hanumat ve

    Meaning: Hanuman is known for his miraculous healing powers. He can cure all diseases and ailments, and provide relief from all kinds of suffering when one chants his name with devotion.


    सङ्कट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै।

    मन क्रम वचन ध्यान जो लावै॥


    Sankat ten Hanuman chhudavae,

    Man kram vachan dhyan jo lavai


    Meaning: Whoever focus their mind, actions, and thoughts on Hanuman, receives his divine grace and blessings and he saves them from all kind of difficulties and hardships of life.


    सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा।

    तिनके काज सकल तुम साजा॥


    Sab par Ram tapasvi raja,

    Tinke kaaj sakal tum saaja


    Meaning: Lord Ram is the supreme king and a great ascetic, and Hanuman is his loyal servant. Hanuman is capable of accomplishing any task assigned to him by Lord Ram, and he can assist all those who seek his help in fulfilling their desires.


    और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै।

    सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥


    Aur manorath jo koi laavai,

    Soi amit jeevan phal paavai


    Meaning: Those who come to Hanuman with any wish or desire are granted the unlimited rewards of an eternal life. Hanuman ensures that his devotees are blessed with whatever they seek, as long as it is in accordance with Lord Ram's will.


    चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा।

    है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥


    Charon jug parataap tumhaaraa,

    Hai parasiddh jagat ujiyaaraa


    Meaning: Hanuman is renowned for his bravery and valor, which have been acknowledged in all four yugas (ages). He is a well-known personality, who brings brightness to the entire world with his glorious deeds and divine grace.


    साधु सन्त के तुम रखवारे।

    असुर निकन्दन राम दुलारे॥


    Sadhu sant ke tum rakhwaare,

    Asur nikandan Ram dulare


    Meaning: Hanuman is a protector of saints and devotees who follow the path of righteousness, and he is also a destroyer of demons and evil forces. Hanuman is beloved of Lord Ram, and he is constantly engaged in serving his divine master.


    अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता।

    अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥


    Asht siddhi nau nidhi ke daataa,

    Asa bar deen Janaki mata


    Meaning: As Blessed by Mother Sita, Hanuman possesses eight mystical powers and nine types of treasures. He gives these siddhis and nidhis only to the deserving ones.


    राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा।

    सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥


    Ram rasayan tumhare paasa,

    Sada raho Raghupati ke daasa


    Meaning: Hanuman holds the elixir of Lord Ram's love and devotion, which he shares with his devotees. He is always present to serve Lord Ram, and he considers himself to be his loyal servant.


    तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै।

    जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥


    Tumhare bhajan Ram ko paavai,

    Janam janam ke dukh bisaraavai

    Antakaal Raghubar pur jaai,

    Jahan janma Hari-bhakta kahaai


    Meaning: At the end of his life, the devotee who utters the name of Hanuman and remembers Lord Ram attains salvation and goes to the abode of Lord Ram, where he becomes known as a devotee of Hari (another name for Lord Vishnu).


    और देवता चित्त न धरई।

    हनुमत सेइ सर्व सुख करई॥


    Aur devata chitt na dharai,

    Hanumat sei sarva sukh karai


    Meaning: Hanuman is so powerful that even the other Devtas cannot withstand his divine grace. He blesses his devotees with all the happiness and prosperity they desire, and his mere presence brings peace and joy to their lives.


    संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा।

    जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥


    Sankat kate mitai sab peera,

    Jo sumirai Hanumat balbeera


    Meaning: Hanuman is the one who can help us overcome all difficulties and troubles in our lives. By remembering him with devotion, one can find the strength to face any challenge and overcome all obstacles.


    जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाईं।

    कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥


    Jai jai jai Hanuman Gosai,

    Krripa karahu Gurudev ki naai


    Meaning: This last verse is a salutation to Hanuman, who is hailed as the lord of the monkeys and a great devotee of Lord Ram. The devotee requests Hanuman to shower his grace and blessings, and to act as a guru or teacher in showing or guiding to the path of devotion to Lord Ram.

    Meaning: The devotee who recites the Hanuman Chalisa 100 times with devotion and sincerity is freed from all kinds of bondage and attains great happiness and peace in life.


    जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा।

    होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥


    Jo yah padhai Hanuman Chalisa,

    Hoye siddhi saakhi Gaureesa
